Materia, Inc. was founded in 1998 to commercialize olefin metathesis catalyst technology. The Company holds the exclusive worldwide rights to the Nobel Prize winning catalyst technology that enables new pharmaceutical, chemical, and polymer products with superior properties as well as new, more efficient and low cost production processes for existing products. Catalysts – substances that facilitate a transformation without being consumed – are indispensable in the manufacturing of countless products throughout the global economy.
Materia’s metathesis catalyst technology enables the manipulation of carbon-carbon bonds in a cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally-friendly manner. Metathesis has been accepted as an emerging “green technology” platform and has been broadly adopted by the pharmaceutical, chemical, and polymer industries.
Materia has developed an extensive intellectual property portfolio around metathesis, including over 350 issued and pending patents (worldwide) covering not only catalyst composition and manufacture, but also methods of using the technology to perform a wide variety of transformations and compositions of certain products. Because Materia has exclusive rights to this extensive patent portfolio, the Company is uniquely positioned to benefit upon the commercialization of products utilizing the technology.
Metathesis serves as the foundation for a broad-based and rapidly growing commercial enterprise. Revenues are currently derived from the sale of proprietary catalysts, the sale of manufactured products enabled by these catalysts, and the licensing of intellectual property. Materia also generates revenue from industrial collaborations, a fee-for-service business in which Materia assists other companies in identifying and developing new products based on its technology.
Materia is a privately held corporation headquartered in Pasadena, California with additional manufacturing facilities in Huntsville, Texas. The Company currently has over sixty employees with broad technical and business experience, a diverse management team with extensive experience in technology companies, a well-rounded Board of Directors, and a world class scientific advisory team.
